Fresh start for an old eyesore

Things look so nice and so charming near the corner of Greenbush Street and Shenandoah Drive, you almost forget how and why the new homes came to be.

And that’s a good thing — exactly what Lafayette officials were going for when they were so aggressive in targeting the former Bridgeway Apartments for condemnation then demolition.

Last week, crews from Lafayette and Brinshore Development celebrated the completion of the project featuring 89 rental unties and 10 single-family homes on the city’s east side. The development features some historic flair that makes the brightly colored structures stand out in a distinctly different way than Bridgeway imposed itself on the neighborhood.

Bridgeway, formerly known as Green Acres Apartments, were more than an eyesore, set at the entrance to the Glen Acres neighborhood. Police wracked up significant crime stats there. And the code violations were the sort you could spot from the road. And that was just on the outside.
